Whixley Village Hall shows what is possible with community-led climate action

A North Yorkshire village hall is showing what can be achieved when communities take a long-term approach to sustainability, with impressive results for both the environment and running costs.

Whixley Village Hall has spent the past few years on a journey to reduce its carbon footprint and improve how the building works for its community. The result is a combination of practical upgrades and forward-thinking investment that is now transforming how the hall is run.

A whole-building approach to change

Rather than focusing on a single improvement, the hall committee took a joined-up approach.

The project included:

  • full insulation of the roof and walls
  • replacing an old oil-fired heating system with an air source heat pump
  • installing new radiators to work with the updated system
  • fitting 72 solar panels to generate electricity on site
  • adding battery storage to capture and reuse energy

Together, these changes have significantly improved the building’s efficiency and reduced its reliance on external energy sources.

From rising costs to breaking even

Before the improvements, the hall was spending around £4,500 a year on energy.

Now, thanks to the upgrades and the ability to generate and store electricity, the hall is breaking even on its energy use. Any surplus energy can be sold back to the grid, helping to support the long-term sustainability of the building.

This shift not only reduces environmental impact but also frees up funds that can be reinvested into activities and improvements for the local community.

Powered by community effort

The full project cost approximately £190,000 and was funded through a combination of grants and local support.

Securing funding required both external investment and contributions from the community, demonstrating the level of local commitment behind the project.

As with many successful village halls, the work has been driven by a dedicated committee and volunteers who are focused on ensuring the hall remains a valuable resource for the future.

A model for other village halls

Whixley Village Hall is now welcoming visitors from other communities who want to see what has been achieved and learn from their experience.

Their message is clear: meaningful change is possible, even in older buildings, with the right mix of planning, support and community involvement.
