Village Green will be popping up at community events across North Yorkshire this May, with free, family-friendly activities designed to help people explore practical climate action in simple, creative and local ways.

From pollinators and seed planting to clean beaches and future visions for greener towns, the events will give people the chance to meet the Village Green team, take part in hands-on activities and find out how small everyday actions can help nature, communities and the places we love to thrive.

Village Green is a three-year project helping communities across North Yorkshire take practical, meaningful action on climate change. The project is made possible thanks to National Lottery players through funding from The National Lottery Community Fund’s Climate Action Fund.

Join the pollinator parade at Ripon Walled Garden
On Saturday 16 May, Village Green will be at Ripon Walled Garden Spring Fair from 9.30am to 4pm.

Visitors can drop by the Village Green stand in the orchard to hear the story of Bill the Bee and discover how bees and other pollinators help flowers to grow. There will also be a chance to win a prize, learn more about the Village Green project and find out how simple actions can support nature to thrive.

The event is free, with parking available on site. Ripon Walled Garden is fully accessible, with disabled toilets and disabled parking for blue badge holders.

Share your vision for a greener Scarborough
Village Green will also be joining the Big Day Out at Scarborough Castle, part of the Big Ideas by the Sea Festival, on Sunday 24 May from 10am to 4pm.

The Village Green team will invite visitors to help create a collective community artwork imagining a more sustainable future for Scarborough. Ideas might include cleaner beaches where marine life can thrive, accessible walking routes, community vegetable gardens, or other practical changes that could help people and nature.

Visitors will also be able to make and take home their own loo roll sea creature craft, as a reminder of the importance of keeping beaches clean for marine life and biodiversity.

There is no cost to take part in Village Green activities, but entry to Scarborough Castle is required for non-Scarborough residents. Entry is free for residents of YO11, YO12 and YO13.

Come grow with us at Skipton Eco Day
On Saturday 30 May, Village Green will be at Skipton Eco Day at Skipton Library from 11am to 3pm.

The team will be running a free seed planting session for anyone who wants to have a go. Whether you are new to gardening or already love growing things, you can plant your own seeds with tools and guidance provided.

Everyone who takes part will be able to take home a pot to plant in a garden, place on a balcony, or use to brighten up a window box.

This is a free drop-in activity and there is no need to book. Skipton Library has automatic doors and wheelchair access to the ground floor.

Come and say hello
All three events are drop-in activities, so people can come along, meet the team and take part at any point during the day.

The Village Green team will be there to chat about practical climate action, local ideas and the small steps that can make a difference across North Yorkshire’s homes, streets, coastlines, green spaces and communities.
