The Village Green team spent the day in Monk Fryston and Hillam this week, learning from one of North Yorkshire’s most inspiring community-led sustainability projects.

The Monk Fryston and Hillam Sustainability Project, led by volunteer Ray Newton and supported by partners including Up for Yorkshire, Yorkshire Energy Doctor, and Community First Yorkshire, has transformed the village’s community centre into a model of energy efficiency and carbon reduction.

What began in 2019 as a local response to growing concern about the environment has become a powerful example of what can be achieved when communities take practical steps towards Net Zero.

“We wanted to show what’s possible — that ordinary communities can make real progress with the right information, partnerships and determination,” said Ray.

Through a series of smart improvements — from insulation and LED lighting to solar PV panels, battery storage, and an air source heat pump — the team has cut the building’s energy use by over 80%, achieving net-zero energy use in summer months and saving around £8,000 in running costs.

The project’s approach is simple but effective: measure everything, act on the data, and share what you learn. The team has now supported more than 20 other community groups to start their own sustainability journeys, loaning equipment and offering advice based on real local experience.

“It’s not an overnight fix — but every community can do this if they take it step by step,” Ray added.

The visit provided the Village Green team with valuable insights into how community-led projects can deliver measurable environmental and financial benefits — lessons that will feed directly into our own work helping groups across North Yorkshire take climate action that really works.

“Monk Fryston and Hillam are a brilliant example of what’s possible when leadership, local expertise and community pride come together,” said the Village Green team. “It’s exactly the kind of ambition and collaboration that Village Green exists to support.”
