Climate action can feel like a big, distant challenge. But in Monk Fryston, it started with a simple decision by local people to act together.

Community leaders from the village school, cricket club and church came together with a shared aim. They wanted to reduce carbon emissions, cut energy costs and give younger generations confidence that positive change is possible.

The short film below shares how Monk Fryston began its sustainability journey, the practical steps taken along the way and the lessons learned that other communities can apply too.

A shared goal rooted in the community

The Monk Fryston sustainability project began in 2019, at a time when conversations about climate change felt overwhelming for many people. Rather than waiting for national solutions, the community focused on what they could do locally.

Their goals were clear. To make community buildings more energy efficient and reduce carbon emissions. To give young people hope and reassurance about the future. And to share their learning with other villages across North Yorkshire facing similar challenges.

Starting small and building momentum

Change did not happen overnight. The project began with simple, low-cost actions such as switching off equipment properly, replacing old lighting with LED bulbs and improving insulation.

Over time, and with expert advice and grant funding, the village was able to invest in solar panels, an air source heat pump and battery storage. These upgrades have significantly reduced energy use and emissions.

Today, during the summer months, the community centre is self-sufficient from an energy perspective and produces no carbon emissions.

The project has also helped challenge common misconceptions. The heat pump performs just as well as the old gas system, and the solar technology has proved reliable and effective.

Benefits beyond carbon

The impact of the project goes beyond environmental benefits. Since starting the work, Monk Fryston has saved around £8,000 in energy costs. That money can now be reinvested into improving facilities and supporting community activities.

There has also been a noticeable shift in attitudes. Initial scepticism has given way to growing interest, with residents choosing to install their own solar panels, batteries and heat pumps after seeing the results locally.

Perhaps most importantly, the project has built confidence. Confidence that climate action can be practical, affordable and led by communities themselves.

Sharing learning with others

From the outset, Monk Fryston committed to sharing what it has learned. Project volunteers have spoken with other organisations, offered informal advice and shared their experience at local events and eco fairs.

This spirit of sharing is central to Village Green.

How Village Green supports communities

Village Green supports communities across North Yorkshire to take practical, achievable climate action that works for local people.

Many village halls and community centres want to act but are unsure where to start. Village Green helps by offering encouragement, connections, resources and support to help communities take that crucial first step.

As Monk Fryston shows, lasting change often begins with small actions, strong local leadership and a willingness to learn along the way.

Village Green is made possible thanks to National Lottery players and is working with communities across North Yorkshire to grow greener futures together.
