Video: Village Green heads to Scarborough Pancake Race
This week, the Village Green team swapped meeting rooms for mixing bowls as we headed to Scarborough for the annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Race.
And yes, we embraced the spirit of the day.
From frogs to flowers, our team got fully involved to help raise awareness of Village Green in a way that felt visible, welcoming and fun. Because climate action does not always have to feel serious. Sometimes it starts with a conversation, a smile, or a slightly windswept pancake race.
Why events like this matter
Village Green is a three-year climate action project supporting communities across North Yorkshire. That means working alongside village halls, community groups and local partners to reduce carbon, improve buildings and strengthen connections through nature-based activity.
Community events like the Pancake Race give us a chance to:
- introduce the project to new audiences
- talk about practical local climate action
- show that environmental work can be creative and inclusive
- connect with people who might not usually attend a climate-focused event
Climate action that fits real life
One of the things we often hear is that climate action can feel overwhelming. Our approach is different. It is about supporting realistic, locally-led change.
Whether that is:
- improving insulation in a village hall
- exploring renewable heating
- creating or restoring ponds
- running community nature events
The focus is always on what works for that place, at that time.
The Pancake Race was a brilliant reminder that climate conversations can happen anywhere. And that sometimes, dressing as a frog helps.

Village Green is funded by The National Lottery and works across North Yorkshire to support practical community climate action.
